Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get to the bottom of this whole “rugby union vs. rugby league” thing for ages. I mean, they both look like a bunch of guys running around with an odd-shaped ball, right? But people get really passionate about the differences, so I figured I’d dive in and see what’s what.

My Deep Dive (Okay, Maybe Not That Deep)
First, I watched some games. I started with YouTube, just searching for “rugby union highlights” and “rugby league highlights.” Honestly, at first, it all looked pretty similar. Lots of tackling, passing, and kicking.
Then, I started to notice some subtle differences. It seemed like in rugby league, they got tackled, got up, and played the ball super fast. In union, there was a lot more…well, piling on. Like, a whole bunch of guys wrestling for the ball on the ground.
So, I hit up some websites and forums. I wasn’t about to do deep academic research or learn every little law. I’m just a regular guy. The reading confirmed what I was seeing. Turns out, the big thing is what happens after a tackle.
- Rugby League: After a tackle, the tackled player gets up and basically rolls the ball back with their foot to a teammate. It’s quick, and they only get six tackles before they have to hand the ball over.
- Rugby Union: After a tackle, it’s a free-for-all! Both teams can contest for the ball, forming what they call a “ruck” or a “maul.” It’s much more of a continuous fight for possession.
I also learned that rugby league has 13 players on a team, and union has 15. Honestly, that’s not something I would have ever noticed just watching.
My Very Scientific Conclusion
After my highly rigorous afternoon of research (ha!), here’s what I figured out:

- Rugby league seems faster and maybe a bit more straightforward.
- Rugby union looks more, uh, complicated…with all the grappling on the ground. It’s a non-stop.
I think I get why people prefer one over the other. League is probably easier to follow if you’re new to the whole thing. Union has more going on, which could be more interesting if you know the rules. The tackle is like the most important moment.
Personally, I’m still not totally sure which one I like better. I might need to watch a few more games… and maybe actually try to learn all the rules one of these days. But hey, at least now I can kind of understand what people are yelling about when they argue about which is the “better” rugby. They are super different!
