Okay, so here’s the deal. I’m gonna walk you through how I’ve been messing around with university of alabama basketball recruiting lately. It’s been a wild ride, lemme tell ya.

It all started when I got super into college hoops, right? And Alabama’s been making moves, so I figured, why not dig into their recruiting game? First thing I did was just hit up Google. Typed in “university of alabama basketball recruiting” and just started clicking on everything. ESPN, 247Sports, Rivals – the whole shebang.
Getting the Lay of the Land
- I spent like, a couple of hours just reading articles and scouting reports. Trying to understand what kind of players Alabama’s coach, Nate Oats, is after. Turns out, he likes guys who can shoot the three and play tough defense. Shocker, right? Every coach wants that.
- Next step? Made a freakin’ spreadsheet. Yeah, I know, sounds nerdy. But I needed to keep track of all these names and where they were ranked. I had columns for player name, position, height, weight, high school, ranking (from different sites), and whether Alabama had offered them a scholarship.
Diving Deeper – The Prospect Profiles
This is where it got kinda fun. I started watching highlight reels of some of the top recruits that Alabama was supposedly interested in. YouTube became my best friend. You can learn a lot about a player from a few minutes of watching them dunk and shoot. I looked for things like:
- Shooting form: Is it smooth? Can they hit shots off the dribble?
- Athleticism: How quick are they? Can they jump?
- Ball-handling: Can they create their own shot?
- Defense: Do they play hard? Can they stay in front of their man?
Trying to Connect the Dots
After watching a bunch of these videos, I started trying to see if there were any patterns. Like, were they all from a certain region of the country? Did they all play on the same AAU circuit? Were there any connections between them and current Alabama players? I even started following some of the recruits on social media, just to see what they were up to. I ain’t gonna lie, it felt a little stalker-ish.
Checking out the Team Needs
Then, I thought about what Alabama actually needed. Like, were they losing a bunch of guards? Did they need more size in the frontcourt? I looked at the current roster and tried to project what it would look like in a year or two. This helped me narrow down the list of recruits that I thought would be a good fit.
Putting it all Together
Okay, so after all that research, I had a pretty good idea of who Alabama was targeting and what their chances were of landing them. It’s all guesswork, of course. Recruiting is a crazy game, and anything can happen. But it was fun to play armchair scout for a while. I even started to understand all the lingo that the recruiting analysts use. I could talk about “evaluating a prospect’s upside” and “assessing their motor” with the best of them.

What I Learned (and What I Didn’t)
Look, I’m not a real recruiting expert. I’m just a guy who likes basketball and has too much time on his hands. But I did learn a few things from this little experiment:
- Recruiting is a full-time job. These coaches are working year-round to find the best players.
- It’s all about relationships. Coaches build relationships with players and their families, and that can be the difference between landing a recruit and missing out.
- There’s a lot of luck involved. Sometimes a player just clicks with a certain school or coach.
Would I do it again? Hell yeah. It’s a fun way to stay engaged with the sport and learn a little bit about how the sausage is made. Plus, if Alabama ends up landing a five-star recruit that I called months ago, I get bragging rights. So there’s that.
