Okay, so I’ve been wrenching on bikes for a while now, and I recently got my hands on an Aprilia RS50. It’s a sweet little machine, but let me tell you, getting it running perfectly was a bit of a journey. I figured I’d share my experience, bumps and all, in case anyone else is tackling one of these.

The Starting Point
When I first got the RS50, it was… well, let’s just say it had seen better days. It was running, but roughly. Really roughly. The idle was all over the place, it was bogging down at low RPMs, and it just felt generally weak. My first thought? Carburetor.
Digging In: Carburetor Chaos
So, I pulled the carb. And man, was it gunked up! Years of old fuel residue and who-knows-what-else had turned the inside into a sticky mess. I took it completely apart – jets, float, needle, everything. I soaked all the metal bits in carb cleaner, making sure to get into every little nook and cranny. For the really stubborn stuff, I used a thin wire to carefully poke through the tiny passages in the jets.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to let those parts soak for a good long while. Patience is key here!
Putting It Back Together
After a thorough cleaning and drying, I carefully reassembled the carb, making sure everything was seated properly. A new gasket set is always a good idea, too. I bolted the carb back onto the bike, connected the fuel lines and throttle cable, and… held my breath.
First Start (and a Few More)
It started! But… it still wasn’t quite right. The idle was better, but still a little erratic. And it was still bogging down a bit. This is where the real tuning began.

- I adjusted the idle screw, little by little, until I found a sweet spot where the engine idled smoothly.
- Then, I played with the air/fuel mixture screw. This is where you really need to listen to the engine. I turned it in small increments, revving the engine slightly after each adjustment, until I found the point where it responded the best.
It took some time, and a lot of going back and forth, but eventually, I got it dialed in. The engine was idling smoothly, revving cleanly, and pulling strong through the entire RPM range. Success!
Other Tweaks
While I was at it, I also checked a few other things:
- Spark plug: I replaced the old one with a fresh one, properly gapped.
- Air filter: Made sure it was clean and properly oiled.
- Exhaust: Checked for any leaks or restrictions.
The Result
After all that work, the Aprilia RS50 was running like a champ! It was a night-and-day difference. The throttle response was crisp, the power delivery was smooth, and it was just a blast to ride. It definitely took some effort, but seeing (and feeling) the results made it all worthwhile. If you’re working on an RS50, don’t give up! With a little patience and elbow grease, you can get these little bikes running great.
