What is a Detroit Diesel? Tips for maintaining your used engine!

Alright folks, buckle up ’cause today’s adventure involved my old workhorse – a used Detroit Diesel that’s been giving me some trouble lately. You know how it is with old engines, they need love, or they throw a fit.

That Annoying Rattle

Noticed this weird rattling noise last week coming from the top end. Sounded like loose change in a tin can, kinda metallic, you know? Figured it was time to stop ignoring it and actually see what’s up.

Popped the valve cover off yesterday – oil everywhere, naturally. Ain’t that always the case? Got my gloves on good and started poking around.

What I Found Lurking Underneath

Right there, plain as day, were a couple of rocker arms wobbling all over the place like they didn’t have a care in the world. Not tight at all! I wasn’t too shocked, honestly. On a used Detroit, especially if you don’t know its history cold, the valve gear can get loose. Seems like a common gremlin with these old girls.

  • Pulled out my trusty feeler gauges – the thicker ones.
  • Started checking the gaps on those wobbly ones.
  • Sure enough, some gaps were way bigger than they should be. Way too much wiggle room!

Took me a hot minute to find the specs for this particular model scribbled down in my ancient workshop manual. Real pain searching for that.

Getting Down to Business

Alright, time to tighten things up. Grabbed the right wrench and my torque wrench – don’t you dare skip the torque wrench! Messing this up can bend pushrods, crack things… bad news.

  1. Turned the engine over slowly with a bar until the suspect valve was completely closed – exhaust valve on cylinder two was the worst offender.
  2. Slid the feeler gauge in. Started tightening the nut down.
  3. Kept going, checking the gap each time, until I felt just a slight drag on the feeler gauge as I pulled it out.
  4. Cranked down to the torque spec. Felt satisfying.

Did this for the couple I found too loose. Took some patience, double-checking each one after I thought it was good.

The Aftermath (and a Happy Surprise)

Got the valve cover back on, sealed tight. Topped off the oil. Took a deep breath and fired her up.

And… that rattle was gone! Music to my ears. Just quiet, deep rumbling now. Felt smoother too, like she wasn’t fighting herself anymore.

Lessons Learned (Again!)

Old Detroits? They’re tough, sure, but they scream for attention. Don’t ignore noises! That rattling is your engine crying uncle. Checking and setting valve lash ain’t rocket science, but you gotta be careful, use the right tools, and follow the steps. A little time spent listening to her and tightening things back up saves you a ton of grief (and cash) later. Keep ’em clean, keep ’em tuned, and they’ll run forever. Mostly.
