Trying to Find the Braves Game on the Radio
Okay, so the other day I really wanted to listen to the Braves game. Couldn’t sit down and watch it, had stuff to do out in the garage. Figured, easy enough, I’ll just get it on the radio like the old days.
First thing, I grabbed my trusty old radio off the shelf. You know the one, covered in a bit of dust. Switched it on, started messing with the dial. Went through the AM band first. Lots of crackling, some talk radio guys yelling about something, but no baseball. Flipped over to FM. Same deal. Twisting that knob back and forth, hearing snippets of songs, ads, more talk. Nothing sounding like a ballpark.
I thought, maybe I’m just missing the right station. I remembered they have that network, the Braves Radio Network. So I took a minute, went inside, and did a quick search on my computer to see what the main station was supposed to be around here. Found the frequency they listed.
Went back out, tuned the radio right to that spot. And yeah, I could kinda hear it! But it was weak. Super weak. One minute I’d hear the announcer, the next just static fuzz. If I moved the radio an inch, it disappeared. Totally frustrating, couldn’t really follow the game like that.
Alright, plan B. My phone. Everyone streams everything now, right? So I pulled out my phone. First tried one of those general radio streaming apps I had. Found the station listed, tapped play. Got a message. Something like “Content not available in your geographic region.” Great. Geoblocked. Seems like you can’t just stream the local broadcast easily if you’re actually local, figure that one out.
Then I thought about the official MLB app. Opened that up. Saw the game listed, saw the little headphone icon for audio. Tapped it. Got hit with a login screen, then something about needing an audio subscription. Look, I just wanted to listen to this one game while I worked, wasn’t planning on paying a monthly fee for radio.
I was getting pretty annoyed at this point. Seemed way harder than it should be.
- Tried the old radio – static city.
- Tried the specific station – signal too weak.
- Tried a streaming app – blocked!
- Tried the official app – wanted money.
I almost gave up, honestly. Thought I’d just have to keep checking the score on my phone every ten minutes, which isn’t the same at all. But then I remembered hearing about an affiliate station, one based a bit further out from the city. Sometimes their signal carries better depending on the weather or whatever.
So I looked up that station specifically. Found their website on my phone’s browser. They had a “Listen Live” button right there. I figured, what the heck, might as well try. Tapped it.
And believe it or not, it worked! Clear as a bell, coming right through my phone speakers. Might have been a slight delay compared to the actual game, but I could finally hear the announcers, the crack of the bat, the crowd. Felt like I’d run a marathon just to get the radio broadcast going, but hey, I got it in the end. Way more complicated than just turning a dial like it used to be, that’s for sure.
