My December 3rd Sweater Project Update
Alright, so today, December 3rd, I finally decided to really get going on that sweater I’ve been planning. You know how it is, you buy the yarn with grand ideas, and then it sits there looking at you.
First thing, I dug out the wool. Found that nice, chunky green yarn I bought maybe last month? Feels soft, should be warm enough for winter. I spread out the pattern I printed ages ago on the coffee table, smoothing out the creases. Had to double-check the needle size it recommended.
Then, the actual start. Found my big wooden needles – the ones that feel good in my hands. I sat down, got comfortable, and started casting on the stitches for the back panel. Took me a couple of tries to get the tension feeling right, not too tight, not too loose. Always a bit fiddly at the beginning.
Getting into the groove:
- Did the first few rows of ribbing for the bottom edge. That 2 knit, 2 purl thing.
- Switched over to the main stitch, just plain old stockinette.
- Really just settled in for a few hours.
Put on some background noise, just some quiet music. Knitting is like that, isn’t it? Very rhythmic. Just row after row. You sort of zone out. I had to keep track of the rows, though. Made little pencil marks on the pattern sheet every ten rows or so. Even then, I messed up once. Looked down and realized I’d somehow dropped a stitch way back. Had to carefully un-knit, or ‘frog’ it back a few rows. Bit annoying, but part of the process.
My fingers started to get a bit stiff after a while, so I took a break. Made a cup of tea, stretched my hands out. Looked at the piece I’d done so far. It’s actually starting to look like something! You can see the fabric building up. It’s maybe a third of the way up the back panel now.

That was pretty much my focus for the day. Didn’t finish the back, but made good progress. Feels good to have actually done it instead of just thinking about it. Tomorrow, I’ll pick it up again. Maybe I can get the back finished and think about starting a front panel. Slow and steady, that’s the plan.
