Okay, so the other day I was trying to remember some of the guys from those early 90s Chicago Bulls teams. You know, beyond Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. My memory’s getting fuzzy, I guess. The name Scott Williams popped into my head, but I couldn’t quite place his exact role, just that he was definitely there.
So, I started digging around. First thing I did was just a basic search, you know, typing his name and “Chicago Bulls” into the search bar. Lots of stuff came up immediately, mostly confirming yeah, he was on those first three championship teams (’91, ’92, ’93). That part was easy.
Then I wanted to know a bit more, like, how did he even get there? I seemed to recall he wasn’t a big star draft pick. Turns out, I was right about that. I found out he went undrafted back in 1990. Came out of North Carolina, which is a big-time school, so kinda surprising he wasn’t drafted. Had some injury issues in college, apparently. That explained it a bit.
My Search Process
So my process went something like this:

- Looked for stats or role – was he just a bench warmer or did he contribute?
- Tried finding old game footage highlights, but mostly found Jordan stuff, obviously.
Finding his specific role took a bit more effort. I had to look through some old stats pages and summaries of those finals games. It wasn’t like today where every player has a million highlight reels. Back then, you really had to rely on box scores or old newspaper articles sometimes, or just your memory if you watched the games live.
What I gathered was that he was a key role player off the bench. A tough guy, rebounder, defender. Did the dirty work, you know? He wasn’t scoring 20 points a game, but he gave them solid minutes when the main guys needed a rest or when they needed some energy. He definitely carved out a nice career for an undrafted player. Lasted over a decade in the league, playing for Philly, Milwaukee, and a few other teams after Chicago.
It’s funny how you remember the superstars vividly, but the glue guys, the role players like Scott Williams, sometimes fade a bit. You know they were important, but the details get lost. Reminds me how much easier it is to find this stuff now compared to back then. Before the internet really took off, you’d just argue with your buddies about who did what, and maybe never find out for sure.
