Getting Started with the Colors
So, I had this old toy car kicking around. You know the type, die-cast metal, seen better days. Wheels were wobbly, paint chipped all over. Was thinking of tossing it, but then I got this idea. Why not give it a fresh look? I always liked those bold, almost retro color combos, and orange and yellow just popped into my head.

The Teardown and Prep Work
First thing, I needed to take it apart. Found a tiny screwdriver that fit the screws on the base. Carefully took those out. The body popped off the chassis pretty easily. Then I had to get the windows out, which were just clear plastic clipped in. Had to be gentle there, didn’t want to snap anything. Once I had the main metal body separated, I gave it a good wash with soap and water to get all the grime off. Let it dry completely. I thought about sanding, but honestly, I just roughed it up a bit with some steel wool I had lying around, just enough so the paint might stick better. Didn’t want to get too technical, you know?
Painting Time: Orange and Yellow Take Over
Alright, the fun part. I grabbed some spray paint I had – a can of bright yellow and a can of vibrant orange. Found a cardboard box to use as a spray booth outside.
- First coat: I started with yellow. Sprayed a light coat all over the metal body. Let that sit for a good hour or so until it was dry to the touch.
- Second coat: Gave it another coat of yellow, making sure it was nice and even. Let that dry really well, maybe overnight just to be safe.
- Adding the Orange: This was tricky. I didn’t have masking tape handy, so I decided to just eyeball it. I wanted the orange on the lower half. Held the can carefully and sprayed the orange along the bottom sides and maybe the hood or trunk area. Yeah, it wasn’t a perfect line, a bit wavy, but it gave it character, I guess. Kind of a custom look, right?
While the body was drying, I cleaned up the wheels and the plastic chassis part. Just wiped them down. Didn’t paint those, kept them stock.
Putting It All Back Together
Once the orange was totally dry – and I mean totally, didn’t want fingerprints – it was time for reassembly. This was basically the reverse of taking it apart. Popped the plastic windows back into the body. That took a bit of fiddling. Then snapped the body back onto the chassis with the wheels. Finally, put the screws back in the base to hold it all together.
The Final Look
And there it was. My little orange and yellow car. It’s definitely bright! Stands out for sure. The paint job isn’t professional quality, especially that line between the colors, but hey, it was a fun little project. Took an old forgotten toy and gave it some new life with just a bit of effort and some paint. Looks cheerful sitting on the shelf now. Pretty happy with how it turned out, honestly. Simple stuff, but satisfying.
