Why do I get such foul tempers? (Understand your anger and find easy steps to a calmer you)

Man, foul tempers. We’ve all bumped into them, haven’t we? Or, let’s be honest, maybe even unleashed one ourselves from time to time. I got to thinking about this whole mess recently, mostly because of a situation that really stuck with me from way back when.

That One Job with That One Manager

So, I was working at this company, your average sort of place. Most of the folks there were decent, you know, just trying to get through the day. But then there was this one manager. Let’s just say his patience was, uh, not exactly his strong suit. It was more like a ticking time bomb, honestly.

We were deep in this project, a real beast. Deadlines were breathing down our necks, stress levels were through the roof – you know the drill. And then, one afternoon, a tiny little thing went sideways. I’m talking seriously small, like a misplaced comma in a draft report or something that would take two seconds to fix. Nothing to lose your hair over, right? Wrong.

The Meltdown and The Fallout

This manager, he just… exploded. I’m not kidding. It was like flipping a switch. Face turned purple, started yelling, stuff was getting knocked around. The whole nine yards. It was pretty wild, like watching a special effect go off in the wrong place.

My first instinct was to try and, you know, de-escalate. I said something like, “Hey, take it easy, it’s no big deal, we can sort this out in a jiffy.” Oh boy, was that a mistake. A massive one. It was like throwing gasoline on a bonfire. He just got louder, started pointing fingers, blaming anyone and everyone. The entire team just clammed up. Nobody dared to breathe too loud. You can bet no work got done for the rest of that day. People were just tiptoeing around, scared to set him off again.

I remember standing there thinking, “This is completely bonkers. How are we supposed to function like this?” And it wasn’t a one-off thing. These eruptions were kind of his signature move. It made the whole atmosphere pretty grim. Good people started looking for the exit, and I can’t say I blamed them. Who wants to work in a warzone?

My So-Called “Practice” and What Stuck

So, what was my grand strategy for dealing with it? My “practice,” so to speak? Well, at the time, I mostly just learned to keep my head down when he was on the warpath. And I got really good at keeping records of everything. You know, just in case. It was more about survival than anything else.

But that whole experience, it taught me a few things, for sure. Here’s what I took away:

  • A bad temper can absolutely wreck a team’s morale.
  • Productivity goes out the window when people are scared.
  • It showed me the kind of leader I never wanted to be.
  • And it made me really appreciate calm, constructive environments later on.

When I finally moved on from that place, you better believe finding a team with a less… explosive dynamic was high on my list. It’s funny, I still think about that manager sometimes and wonder if he ever learned to cool his jets. Probably not. Some people just seem to enjoy the drama, I guess. But going through that, seeing the damage firsthand, it definitely made me more conscious of how I handle pressure myself. I actively try to be the person who stays steady when things get chaotic, not the one adding to the noise. It’s an ongoing thing, this “practice” of staying cool. Still a work in progress, always will be.
